What you might want to discuss
For example:
- Self-criticism linked to a particular experience.
- Something that is difficult to put into words.
- The distinction between an action and your view of yourself.
How I work with this
Where relevant, we can look at the words that come up about yourself, the experiences connected with them and what they change. Where an action caused harm, we can discuss responsibility and what you can do now. The aim is to understand your circumstances without assuming their cause.
Appointments
Start with a free welcome call to discuss what you want to work on and ask about sessions. We agree appointments separately, subject to availability.
Before you book
Questions worth asking.
How do I know if it's shame, or just low mood?+
We can discuss the experience without first choosing a label. A GP can assess persistent low mood or other health concerns.
Is this only for something I've actually done wrong?+
No. The work can concern an experience, a relationship or how you judge yourself. We start with what you describe.
Will talking about it make it worse?+
Discussing painful material can be difficult. We agree a pace, review how the work affects you and discuss further support if needed.
What actually qualifies you to work with this?+
My foundation is person-centred counselling, with a Level 5 Diploma in CBT (CPCAB) and further training in Restorative Practice and FACT. See the About page for training and registration details.
Do I have to tell you everything about a shameful experience at once?+
We discuss the focus and pace. You can begin with how the experience affects you now.
