Difficult experiences and trauma
counselling for men

If something distressing happened and you want help with it, we can discuss what you are looking for and whether my practice is the right fit.

What you might want to discuss

For example:

  • How an experience is affecting daily life or relationships.
  • Situations or reminders that are hard to be around.
  • What would make a counselling appointment manageable for you.

How I work with this

We begin with your current circumstances and needs. I offer integrative counselling; I do not offer EMDR or claim specialist trauma-treatment accreditation. Where specialist assessment or treatment is needed, we discuss an appropriate referral. We agree what to discuss and review how sessions affect you.

Before you book

Questions worth asking.

Do I need a PTSD diagnosis before I can talk to someone about this?+
You can enquire without a diagnosis. A qualified health professional can assess possible PTSD and advise on treatment.
Do you use EMDR or other trauma-specific therapies?+
I do not offer EMDR. We discuss my counselling approach and whether specialist trauma treatment would be more appropriate.
What if I don't want to talk about the details of what happened?+
Tell me that at the outset. We can discuss your current needs and the boundaries you want for the conversation.
Will this bring things up that make it worse before it gets better?+
I cannot predict how a session will affect you. We review the pace and discuss other support if the work is not appropriate.
What if it happened a long time ago - does that matter?+
You can enquire about an earlier experience. We discuss its current effect and the support you need.
