Meet Chris Brotherton

Your counsellor

If a relationship problem is what brought you here, we can start with what happened rather than trying to decide who was right. We can look at how you understand it, what was and was not within your control, and what you want to do next.

My work is grounded in person-centred therapy. Where it helps, I draw on CBT, FACT and Restorative Practice, and we work out together what is useful.

What I help with

Relationship problems

A lot of my work starts with relationships - understanding what happened, communicating differently, making a decision, rebuilding after something changed, or working out what you want next.

Sessions

How we work together

We start with what is happening now and what you want to be different. There is no fixed formula. If you already know what you want to do, we can look at what happens when you try it. If you do not know yet, we can start there.

Standard conversations last 50 minutes. Longer conversations are also available. What you say is confidential, and I explain the limits of that before we start.

Understand what is happening

We start with what is going on and what you notice when it comes up, including what your mind starts telling you about it.

Decide what matters to you

We work out what you need, where your boundaries are and what is actually within your control. You decide what matters and what you want to do next.

Try something different

If there is something you want to try differently, we work that out together. You take it outside the session, see what happens, and we make sense of it from there.

Sometimes that means working towards repair - with someone else, or with yourself. Sometimes it means deciding for yourself what comes next.

In-person sessions run in Southport, PR8 and PR9.

Before you book

What happens on the free welcome call?

Tell me what you want help with, and ask whatever you need to. The welcome call is for deciding whether to work together and is not a therapy session.

Do I have to book therapy after the call?

No. The call is for asking questions and working out whether you want to start. If you do, we arrange sessions separately afterwards.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No. You can book directly with me.

Do I have to commit to a set number of sessions?

No. You can book one session at a time at £60, or pay £275 upfront for 5 sessions if you already know you want some continuity. Neither is a commitment to finish a set number.

Is what I say confidential?

I explain confidentiality and its limits before sessions begin. Relevant material may be discussed in clinical supervision. Information may need to be shared for serious safety concerns or legal requirements; where possible, I discuss this with you.
