Working with a counsellor outside London.
Sessions run by secure video or phone. A link arrives beforehand and the session lasts the same fifty minutes it would in a room.
The fee does not change because of your postcode. £60 a session is the same fee a man in Southport pays. There is no separate London rate.
The other reason is separation. If you would rather talk to someone with no connection to your work, your friends or your part of the city, counselling from outside London offers that.
That applies to students as much as anyone. If your university offers counselling, it is worth checking what it covers, including any session limits or eligibility rules.
Covered from here
What you need for an online session.
Somewhere private and a phone or laptop. The link arrives by email beforehand. If you share a flat, it is worth working out where you will take the session before the first one.
Men counselling men.
If you specifically want to work with a male counsellor, Men’s Therapy UK offers that option. This is a one-man practice working only with men, so there is no matching process to go through.
What you can bring to counselling.
A job that has taken over.
Hours that were supposed to be temporary, a role that expanded, and no longer being sure what the rest of your life is meant to look like.
Being surrounded and still alone.
Being around people constantly and having nobody you would actually ring at eleven at night.
Money pressure that never lets up.
Earning what would be a fortune elsewhere and still finishing the month with nothing, then feeling unable to complain about it.
Living a long way from where you are from.
Family several hours away, and the particular tiredness of handling everything without the people who knew you first.
Studying a long way from home.
A term in a city where you know almost nobody yet, family in another country, and a time difference sitting between you and the people you would normally ring.
Something you cannot say back home.
Something that would cost more to say to the people who knew you before, and nowhere obvious to say it first.
Why pick someone who is not in London.
If you are weighing up several counsellors at once, here is what this practice actually offers.
Nobody you will run into.
I have no connection to your industry, your friends, your gym or your borough, and I never will. If keeping counselling separate from the rest of your life matters to you, that is what this offers.
Warm, plain, and northern with it.
That is a claim about me, so do not take it from a page. The free welcome call will tell you whether it fits, and it costs you nothing if it turns out not to.
You get me, every time.
This is a one-man practice. No associate you get passed to, no intake team, no rota. The person on the free welcome call is the person you work with, and I bring lived experience alongside the training.
If London is not where you are from.
If you came for the work and left the rest of your life somewhere else, it can be easier to say so to someone who is not part of the city you are weighing up.

Does the welcome call commit me to counselling?
+
No. You can ask questions, tell me what you would like help with and decide whether to work with me. There is no obligation to book counselling afterwards.
Does the fee change because I am in London?
+
The published counselling fee is the same for online and in-person appointments. There is no separate London rate.
I share a flat. Where else could I take a session?
+
What if I move flat or change job part way through?
+
Nothing changes. There is no catchment area to fall outside of and no transfer to arrange - the work carries on wherever you end up, including outside London entirely.
My university offers free counselling. Should I use that first?
+
If your university offers free counselling and it fits what you need, it may be worth using. Check what it offers, including any session limits or eligibility rules. If it does not fit what you need, this is another option.
